We worked with a small Massachusetts-based shelter, doing extensive social media and PR outreach. The work was so impactful that the shelter was awarded an unsolicited grant from Tennessee-based Mutt Nation, singer Miranda Lambert's foundation. Fifty such grants were awarded to a charity in each of the 50 states. The fact that a tiny regional shelter was chosen (from 452 MA animal shelters) was credited to our brand enhancement efforts and would have been a win in itself.
But by clever positioning, we were the only one of the 50 charities to also receive massive PR for it, turning a small, unsolicited grant into a PR bonanza. Instead of a simple press release announcing the grant, we linked it to specific event: a waiving of adoption fees. The story was picked up by 600+ media outlets, and internationally (England's The Daily Mirror). Social media follower numbers nearly doubled that week, and within 2 days, every single pet in the shelter was adopted during what is typically the slowest month of the year.
For years, a small animal charity sent semiannual newsletters to its donor list, viewing the costly mailing as an engagement tool. The payoff was negligible: a survey revealed that most of those who received the b & w publication threw it out without reading.
We redesigned the format in full color and included more general interest articles, including a teased story featured near the address to pique curiosity & improve readership. We also included a self addressed envelope with each mailing.
Result #1 of the re-design: The newsletter went from a marketing cost to a significant source of earned income.
Result #2: We printed extra copies for distribution to local veterinary clinic waiting rooms. We ensured placement in these clinics by adding a regular "column" featuring an interview with a rotating roster of those same local vets. This placement enhanced the organization's brand with a new pool of likely prospective donors and adopters.
